Three-day Training-Workshop on Rights-based Conservation

Pokhara: The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) Climate Change Partnership Program organized a three-day  workshop from May 5–7, 2026 on the rights-based advocacy in natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. 98 Indigenous Peoples attended the training-workshop including 61% men and 39% women representing diverse age group. The objective of the workshop was to raise awareness and strengthen the capacity of Indigenous Peoples, while ensuring gender equality, to advocate for a human rights-based approach to biodiversity conservation and climate action. The workshop aims to enhance understanding of policies, climate actions, natural resource management, climate finance and Indigenous led solutions, while strengthening both individual and institutional advocacy for the rights, roles and responsibilities of Indigenous Peoples in conservation and climate action.

The participant discussed on Impact of climate change and shared experiences on safeguarding Indigenous knowledge, culture and livelihoods. Using a participatory and interactive approach, the workshop combined presentations, facilitated discussions, video documentaries, experience sharing sessions, group work and reflections. The workshop highlighted on various topics like Climate change, Biodiversity, Mitigation, Adaptation, Nepal’s forest Act, National parks and wildlife conservation Act and Indigenous Peoples, International and national legal foundations of Indigenous Peoples’ rights, Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and so on. The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to advancing the rights, roles and meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples in biodiversity conservation and climate action at local, national and international level.
