Indigenous Peoples' Rights in the GCF Funded Project

The project “Building a Resilient Churia Region in Nepal (BRCRN)” is the first the Green Climate Fund (GCF) funded project in Nepal. The overall objective of BRCRN is to address climate change induced challenges by enhancing the resilience of ecosystems and vulnerable communities in 26 vulnerable river systems in the Central and Eastern Churia Tarai-Madhesh region of Nepal. This project amongst other objectives, aims to build the capacities of governments, communities and other stakeholders to better understand and respond to climate risks in the region by supporting management of land, forests and other natural resources in order to enhance climate-resilient, low-emissions and sustainable development pathway for the Churia region. Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) with support from BRCN/The Ministry of Forest and Environment and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is carrying out sub-project, “Institutional Capacity Strengthening of Indigenous Peoples Organizations within BRCRN in Nepal”.

This sub-project aims to enhance the capacity of Indigenous Peoples Organizations of the BRCRN project area in relation to the existing government’s act, policies, international conventions and treaties such as United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Green Climate Fund (GCF) Indigenous People Policy, application of Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and appropriate grievances redress mechanisms.
