A Side Event on “Indigenous Peoples Call for Climate Action” Organized by NEFIN in World Social Forum 2024

Kathmandu: The 16th World Social Forum, themed “Another World is Possible,” took place from February 15–19, 2024, in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) successfully organized a side event on “Indigenous Peoples Call for Climate Action” on February 16, 2024.

Mr. Gelje Lama Shepa, the Chairperson of NEFIN opened the event in Indigenous traditional way by burning Tsumee (butter lamps). Activities like publication distribution, panel discussions, interactions, and the sharing of video documentaries were all part of the event. The eminent panelists, including Mr. Divash Rai, NEFIN’s general secretary; Ms. Chini Maya Majhi, chair of Nepal Majhi Utthan Sangh; Dr. Felipe Melo, Nottingham Trent University, UK; Mr. Durga Mani Rai, LAHURNIP’s Program Coordinator; and Ms. Tsering W. Gurung, NEFIN CCPP, delivered perceptive on issues of Indigenous Peoples vis-a-vis climate change impact, biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, displacement and loss and damage of Indigenous Peoples. Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa, a well-known multidimensional social worker from the Solukhumbu district, gave an insightful, stimulating, and productive talk about tourism, the mountains of Nepal, his journey in Mt Everest region, and changing climatic condition in the region. The event was moderated by Mr. Tunga Rai and Ms. Lhakpa Dhokpya. The event was attended by a large number of individuals, including Indigenous leaders, journalist, activist, academicians, youngsters and international participants.

Overall, the event remained instrumental in disseminating information, share experiences and amplify the voice of Indigenous peoples. NEFIN extends its appreciation to all of the panelists, presenters, and attendees of the event for making this side event equally memorable and productive.
