PODONG Initiative: Reviving Indigenous Knowledge Through Vocational Training

Bardiya, Sindhupalchok & Solukhumbu: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) under the PODONG Initiative, successfully conducted vocational training based on Indigenous knowledge and technical skills in Bardiya, Sindhupalchok, and Solukhumbu. The initiative focused on revitalizing Indigenous knowledge, skills, and practices that are in the verge of extinction, while strengthening their continuity through practical and sustainable learning. The trainings engaged Indigenous Peoples representing Tharu, Tamang, Majhi, Rai (Kulung), and Sherpa. A total of 224 participants took part in the trainings, including 191 women and 33 men, with strong participation from women and youth contributing to recognizing the knowledge of Indigenous women while strengthening their confidence and role in skills transmission and livelihoods.
The trainings covered Indigenous traditional fabric and clothes (Lehenga Choliya, Lungi, Pachhaura, Chaubandi Cholo, Bhoto, Coat, Sutta/Furka, Phenga) , indigenous musical instruments (Dhongam/Binayo), as well as technical skills such as electrical work and plumbing. The initiative contributed to strengthening practical skills, recognizing the value of indigenous knowledge, and expanding opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. It also supported in the application and continuity of ancestral knowledge in everyday practice, contributing to household wellbeing.
