PODONG: Initiative for Preservation and Continuation of Indigenous Knowledge and Identity

Pokhara: The Climate Change Partnership Program (CCPP)/Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), under the PODONG indigenous peoples initiative supported by IUCN, organized a three-days national level training workshops from December 23-25, 2025, Hotel Mount Kailash, Pokhara.
The purpose of the event’s was to increase participants’ understanding of the fundamental connections between nature, indigenous peoples’ traditional behaviors, and the consequences of climate change. Indigenous and customary systems, indigenous products, cultural dress, songs and dances were demonstrated. Indigenous peoples’ worldviews, lives, and land-territory were elaborated, and their culture and collective rights were elaborated upon. These days, the natural environment, including rivers, mountains, and animals, often has spiritual significance were ignored and in the stage of less recognition. The devotion, which fosters a deep respect for the natural environment, shapes their ceremonies, stories, and practices were not recognized as it should be. Our argument is the value of the Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge and their accumulated and time-tested a wealth of knowledge about their own ecosystems need to be highly acknowledged. The challenges faced by the indigenous peoples’ communities and encounters due to expansions and hard rules of national parks and conservation.
Participants in the event were included Chairperson of Municipality, Ward Chairpersons, Badghar of Tharu community, Social Mobilizers, representatives from Tamang, Majhi, Rai and Sherpa Central Committee, members of Youth Groups, and representatives from the traditional institutions of Indigenous Peoples, Simpal, Bodgaun-Sindhupalchowk, Chheskam-Mamerku-Solukhumbu, Mahakulung, and Bansgadhi-Bardiya. In addition to this the members of secretariate of federal council member were also presented in the event.
