NEFIN Climate Change Partnership Program in partnership with NEFIN DCC Dhankuta conducted a two-days training cum workshop for indigenous peoples in Dhankuta from July 6-7, 2016. Key objective of this event was to aware indigenous peoples including women, youth, journalist and students, about issues of climate change, REDD+ and indigenous peoples’ concerns related with climate change actions including REDD+. Ensuring participation of all the indigenous representative of the district, participants invited from each indigenous group of the district. Besides that, representatives from indigenous women’s’ organization, youth, student, journalist and NEFIN’s district chapter that was very instrumental to reach out the effort to the wider scale.
All together 45 participants from 4 different districts (e.i. Bhojpur, Sankhuwashabha, Tehrathum and Dhankuta) actively participated the training. Importantly, the government officials in the district namely, Chief District Officer, District Forest Officer, Local Development Officer, District Agriculture Development Officer, and Women Development Officer attended the opening session and closing session of the training. Remark of those officials was very helpful for building cooperation and mutual trust amongst indigenous peoples and relevant government offices. In the end of this training cum workshop, participants to some extent gained updates on the issues of indigenous peoples related with climate change and REDD+. They discussed about the emerging and urgent issues that will be useful to draw way forward for the future. Participants emphasized securing their rights, implementation of Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC) and other national and international instruments of indigenous peoples rights, in climate change actions.
