Kathmandu, Oct 10: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Climate Change Partnership Program has conducted a two-day training program on climate change targeting indigenous youth at Hotel Country Villa in Nagarkot on September 30 to October 01, 2021. The aim of the training was to raise awareness, empowerment, and cooperation of indigenous youth in Climate Change issues and advocacy. The 21 youth (11 male and 10 female) representatives from various indigenous organizations have participated in the program.
The organizer was well aware of the risk of the Covid-19 epidemic and disseminated information, and provided safety measures such as face shields, face masks, and sanitizers during the sessions. Physical distance and other health precautions were taken during the seminar. The event was conducted among a limited number of participants due to the risk of Covid–19 infection.
During the training, trainers shared the provisions of policies, programs, and projects on climate change in Nepal. The main objective of the training was to raise awareness among the participants about climate change and issues related to indigenous peoples, collective rights, and interdependence of indigenous peoples with natural resources such as water, land and forest.
During the training sessions, trainers presented powerpoint on the provisions of international documents including the Paris and Cancun Agreements under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the international commitments made by the Nepal government and the obligations created by it, and the status of Nepal’s national laws in this regard. Like this, working papers were presented on the climate change adaptation and mitigarion, IPs Issues in REDD+, National Adaptation Plan (NAP), Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Document–2020, Climate Finance and its operations in Nepal, Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Projects, Meaning and Context of IPs policy provisions, land rights.
